Whadjuk Region – Nyoongar People
The Wadjuk Dialectal group – has a rich history and cultural significance for these aboriginal people.
Nyoongar means “Knowledge” – lived in the area for 45,000 years
World War 2 Chidlow
Was the location for a significant Army Camp on Old Northam Road near Haigh and Forge Roads, Camp completed in 1943
Chidlow was settled/settlement 1883 – terminus for the Eastern Railway (Guilford to Chidlow)/ Line and Railway station opened March 1884 and went through to Northam opening Oct 1886 (Guilford to Northam)
Lake Leschenaultia was originally constructed to provide water for the steam trains.

The story of the beautiful Bungarra Wines is about a serene beauty of this 19 year old vineyard. Today, this magnificent boutique winery – situated along Old Northam Road retains the charm and grace of the past and benefits from traditional viticulture using quality fruit handling to produce premium wines. As you enter the estate you are greeted by a vista of colourful trees, greenery ….. a welcome gateway to this unique experience that is Bungarra Wines.
First vines were planted in 1996 then extended in 1998, 2001
Cool winters and warm summer days, combined with fertile free-draining soils have traditionally resulted in successful fruit growing in this Perth hills region and more recently the production of quality wine grapes has flourished.

After five years of neglect, my wife and I purchased the property in 2021 and took on the challenge of restoring the vineyard, house, and orchards. Having grown up on small farms, we embraced the opportunity to bring the land back to life. It has been an immense task but a true labor of love.

The Bungarra Vineyard
The Bungarra Wines Vineyard takes its name from the numerous Bungarra’s (Race Horse Goanna’s) that roam the property in Summer.
The Vineyard is located just 4 kilometres from the townsite of Chidlow. The Chidlow townsite was originally known as Chidlow’s Well where the Chidlow’s Well railway station was opened in 1884 and served as a terminus and vital water supply for the Eastern Railway steam trains travelling through to Northam, York and the goldfields of Western Australia. The railway station and townsite name was changed from Chidlow’s Well to Chidlow in 1920. Cool winters and warm summer days, combined with fertile free-draining soils have traditionally resulted in successful fruit growing in this Perth hills region and more recently the production of quality wine grapes has flourished.
The first vines planted were Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc in 1995 with subsequent plantings of Shiraz and Verdelho varieties. These wines are performing particularly well, winning medals in both the Perth Hills and Swan Valley wine shows
