Bungarra Wines

Bungarra FAQS

The Winery & Wines:

Where is Bungarra Wines Located?

Bungarra Wines is a boutique winery located in Chidlow, in the Perth Hills of Western Australia. Our vineyard is approximately 4 kilometres from the Chidlow townsite, on Old Northam Road.

The vineyard takes its name from the Bungarras, or racehorse goannas, that roam the property, particularly during the warmer months.

All Bungarra Wines are single estate grown, on our vineyard in Chidlow, in the Perth Hills.

Bungarra is a small, hands-on boutique winery focused on traditional viticulture, careful vineyard management and quality fruit handling. The vines are hand pruned and the grapes are selectively handpicked in the cool of the early morning.

Bungarra Wines currently grows Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Shiraz and Verdelho. We have also recently planted grafted Mourvèdre, a bold red grape known for a full-bodied wine. This variety is also known by the name ‘Mataro’.

Hand picking takes more time and labour, but it allows the team to be selective about the fruit being harvested and helps minimise unnecessary handling and bruising. Bungarra believes careful fruit handling contributes to better quality wine.

Traditional viticulture means taking a hands-on approach to vineyard management, including hand pruning, selective hand harvesting and careful fruit handling. The focus is on maintaining healthy vines and producing quality fruit rather than relying solely on large-scale mechanical processes.

Grapes are picked in the cool of the early morning to help keep the fruit cool and in good condition as it moves from the vineyard to the winery. The cooler conditions also make early morning harvesting more suitable for both the fruit and the people doing the harvesting.

Bungarra Wines won Bronze awards for three wines in the 2025 Perth Hills Wine Show.

Tasting Notes

2024 Chenin Blanc

Silver Award Perth Hills Wine Show 2026 – 90.3 Bronze award Perth Hills Wine Show 2025 – 87.67 This Chenin was hand harvested in the cool early morning before crushing and pressing to stainless steel tanks. A long cold ferment and early bottling ensured the wine retained maximum freshness and the pure acid drive Chenin is renowned for.  Classic granny smith apple flavours dominate with more subtle green pineapple and lemonade lemon notes.

2024 Chardonnay

Bronze Award at the Perth Hills Wine Show 2026 – 88.7

Hand harvested in the cool early morning, this Chardonnay was crushed and pressed before being divided between stainless steel and ceramic egg for fermentation. The stainless steel preserves the wine’s fruit purity and bright, pristine acidity, while the ceramic egg adds texture and roundness to the palate.

The result is a generous, mouth-filling unoaked Chardonnay with lifted aromatics and vibrant flavours of grapefruit, white peach and nectarine. Fresh, textured and beautifully balanced, it’s a Chardonnay that delivers plenty of flavour without the weight of oak. Cellar – 4 years

2023 Shiraz

Bronze award winning wine at the Perth Hills wine September 2025. Red fruit, floral and spice, sweet fruit mid, oaky finish, red cherry nose, little bit VA, dry tannins, finish warm and dry, brick red, simplesilky rich plush pure great lenth. Score 86.33. Ray Jordan Review: Shiraz works well in the Perth Hills, and this one is first-rate from this excellent vintage. Aromas of vanilla and spice with some deep plummy notes, the flavours build on a medium weight palate that is seamlessly integrated with fine tannins and gentle oak persuasion, creating a soft, plush and smoothly textured palate. Love the rich plummy fruit character and just that hint of confectionery cherry. This is an excellent wine, thoroughly enjoyable. Cellar – 6 years. Score 94. This Shiraz was hand harvested in the cool early morning before being crushing into traditional open topped fermenters and held on skins for 10 days during fermentation. With the cap worked every 6 hours, the wine developed a deep rich colour and firm structural tannins. Maturation occurred in Minnesota American Puncheons which has added spicy, sweet vanillin to the fruits natural earthy, rich blood plum and dark cherry flavours. Enjoy now or cellar over the medium term.

2023 Methode Traditionelle blanc de blanc (Sparkling Chardonnay)

Bronze Award 2026 Perth Royal Food Show: Wine – 85.00

A beautifully complex sparkling wine with aromas of lemon meringue, biscuit and subtle oyster shell. The palate is rich and creamy, with a fine, persistent mousse and flavours of yellow peach and grapefruit. Bright acidity and a distinct saline character provide freshness and drive, carrying the wine through to a long, dry finish with lingering lemon pith.

A refined expression of Méthode Traditionnelle, this Blanc de Blanc showcases Chardonnay at its best, balancing richness and texture with bright acidity, precision and a lingering mineral character. BRONZE in the 2026 Perth Royal Food Awards – Wine Class 46 Sparkling White & Rosé – 30 Months or More Tirage
“Our 2023 Méthode Traditionnelle Blanc de Blanc is a particularly exciting release for us. It’s our first sparkling Chardonnay, and we were genuinely impressed by how drinkable this wine is. The tasters rated it highly and we think its combination of elegance, freshness and sheer drinkability will make it a popular addition to the Bungarra range.” Chris, Bungarra Wines

2011 Methode Traditionelle Chenin Blanc (Sparkling Chenin)

Bronze award winning wine at the Perth Hills wine September 2025. Fine bead, creamy lees, nice acid line, lighter and tighter, higher rs, floral, lanolin, big mousse, very phenolic, pale yellow in colour, fresh, zesty waxy toasty notes lovely mouth fee lemon pith. Score 86.33. Ray Jordan Review: One of an increasing number of excellent sparkling Chenin’s being produced in WA. An excellent wine with lots of primary, vibrant, generous fruit. There’s a slight waxy stone fruit melon character there, but it has life and energy coursing, through a palate thats intense and long. Impressive little sparkling wine this. Cellar – 3 years. Score 91. This Chenin Blanc was hand harvested in the cool early morning before whole bunch pressing to a stainless steel tank. After primary fermentation a traditional secondary fermentation was conducted in bottle to produce this sparkling wine. Time on the yeast lees in bottle has built palate texture and flavour before hand disgorging when a small dosage liqueur is added to help balance the acidity. The result is a crisp and refreshing Australian Sparkling.

2017 Sparkling Shiraz

This Shiraz was hand harvested in the cool early morning before crushing into traditional open fermenters for fermentation on skins. After primary fermentation a traditional secondary fermentation was conducted in bottle to produce this sparkling wine. Time on the yeast lees in bottle has built palate texture and flavour before hand disgorging when a small dosage liqueur is added to help balance the acidity. The result is a crisp and refreshing classic Australian Sparkling red.
